13. Destiny

The Saturday after New Years, Liam decided it was time to see the oracle. The research he’d been conducting with Thomas on the Apocalypse Prophecies had come to a dead-end and he figured it couldn’t be delayed any longer. The Sunday before school was to resume, he and Ariel concocted an alibi so she could accompany him on the trip.

Before Ariel went to school Monday morning, she told her parents she was going up to the university in Seattle the upcoming weekend for orientation so she would be ready to take some college classes in the fall. Both accepted the lie and signed the phony permission slip Liam had composed.

On the Saturday morning they planned to leave, Ariel packed a large duffle bag into her little car and drove to the Engel’s Mansion. She parked in front of the house and popped the trunk. Liam was already unloading her bag before she climbed out of the car.

“Ready to go?” he asked, disappearing and reappearing by his car.

Ariel frowned at his use of super speed. “I told you not to do that.”

“Sorry.” He closed the Aston’s trunk. “But we are on a tight schedule.” He shot over to the passenger door and opened it. “Our flight leaves at ten.”

She glanced at her watch. “That only leaves us with forty minutes to get to the airport.”

“Then you’d better hurry.”

Ariel jumped into the Aston and her door slammed in unnatural unison with Liam’s as he climbed into the driver’s seat. The engine revved and they shot down the driveway, a plume of dust billowing into the air behind them.

“If you keep driving so fast we’re going to get pulled over and miss our flight,” Ariel warned as the mountainous countryside shot past them.

“I’m sure a cop won’t be able to react fast enough,” Liam chuckled.

They made it to Seattle in twenty-five minutes. Liam drove the Aston through the backed-up streets of Seattle, weaving through the morning traffic without slowing down. As Ariel watched the city whip by the window, she noticed they were heading away from the airport.

“Where are we going?” she puzzled.

“You’ll see.” Liam immediately whipped the car into a parking garage and they screeched to a halt in an empty stall. Ariel moved to open the door, but all her hand grasped was air.

“I should call you speedy,” she joked, climbing out of the car.

“Sorry, but we need to get going if we’re going to make our flight on time.” Liam closed the door behind her and pulled their bags from the trunk. He slung Ariel’s heavy duffle over his shoulder as if it was filled with nothing more than foam packing peanuts.

They hurriedly crossed the parking area and entered a stairwell. Their footsteps echoed throughout the shaft as they descended down to street level. Liam quickly moved up the street. Despite the fast pace, his strides looked normal, like it was how he usually walked. Ariel had to jog to keep up. As they crossed the street, Ariel caught a brief glimpse of the Seattle harbor between buildings.
